ZERO WASTE SCHOOL-TO-SCHOOL INITIATIVE

Building a Generation of Eco-Literate Changemakers…

Health, Environment & You (HEY), in collaboration with the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), is proud to launch the Zero Waste School-to-School Campaign across Port Harcourt, Rivers State.

This grassroots initiative is part of our ongoing commitment to promote sustainable waste management and climate action through hands-on environmental education.

Our latest visit was to Army Day Secondary School, Port Harcourt, where we brought our message of “Wealth in Waste” to life. Upon arrival, we were met with a large heap of unsorted waste within the school premises — a visible reminder of the urgent need for awareness and action.

We engaged students in an interactive session on waste segregation at the source, emphasizing the importance of separating recyclables to simplify collection, prevent pollution, and reduce the harmful effects of mixed waste on health and the environment.

Following the classroom session, we led a practical demonstration at the school’s dumpsite, near the market square. There, students actively participated in sorting waste, gaining firsthand experience in sustainable waste practices. The excitement was palpable — students and teachers alike were surprised by the value hidden in what was previously seen as “trash.”

Many expressed astonishment at the economic potential they had unknowingly discarded through improper waste disposal. Their enthusiasm confirmed our belief: empowering young people with knowledge and action creates real change.

Target: 500+ schools across the State

Goals: Promote environmental education, champion responsible waste disposal, foster a culture of recycling, and spark students’ climate action.

This campaign is proudly aligned with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals:
SDG 6 (Clean Water and Sanitation)
SDG 11 (Sustainable Cities and Communities)
SDG 12 (Responsible Consumption and Production)
SDG 13 (Climate Action)

Join us in shaping eco-conscious leaders and building a cleaner, greener future — one school at a time.
